Malaysia's producer price index falls 0.3 pct in October

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's producer price index (PPI), which measures the prices of goods at the factory gate, declined 0.3 percent in October after recording an increase of 0.2 percent in September, official data showed Tuesday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the manufacturing sector decreased by 0.7 percent in October, leading to the decline in the overall index of October.

Subsectors that contributed to the decrease were manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-8.8 percent), food products (-4.2 percent), and chemicals and chemical products (-2 percent).

Meanwhile, the electricity and gas supply index dropped by 0.5 percent.

The agriculture, forestry and fishing sector, however, increased by 3.8 percent. The mining sector also grew by 0.5 percent in October.

On a monthly basis, the PPI for local production fell by 0.3 percent in October after recording a 0.9 percent increase in the previous month.

Most of the sectors posted a decline except the water supply which recorded an increase of 0.8 percent.
