ZARANJ, Afghanistan, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Police have detained three drug smugglers and found illegal drugs in west Afghanistan's Nimroz province, provincial counter-narcotics chief of police department Abdul Wasi Raihan said on Thursday.
The contraband included 1.3 kg of heroin, 8 kg of opium, 29 kg of hashish and some materials used in manufacturing heroin, the officer said.
Without providing more details, the officer said that the smugglers had been referred to the judiciary.
Similarly, police arrested a smuggler on charge of selling illicit drugs in the southern Kandahar province a couple of days ago.
Police have also discovered 4.6 kg of heroin in a series of operations in the capital city of Kabul over the past six months.
The Afghan caretaker government has vowed to fight against illegal drugs, cultivation of illicit crops including poppy, processing of drugs and drug trafficking until the country gets rid of the menace.
The poppy cultivation in Afghanistan has dropped by an estimated 95 percent since the country's caretaker government imposed a drug ban in April 2022. ■
