DHAKA, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- A head-on collision between a bus and an autorickshaw left seven people dead in Bangladesh on Tuesday, a local police official said.

The fatal road accident happened at around 11:45 a.m. local time in the Chattogram district, some 242 km southwest of the capital city of Dhaka, said Md Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station in Chattogram.

He said the bus lost control on the Chattogram-Khagrachhari highway in Hathazari area and collided with the autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction.

"Three women, three children and one man died in the accident," he said.

The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.

In September, a total of 496 people were killed and 681 others injured in 467 accidents on roads, railways and waterways in Bangladesh, according to a report published by the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a passenger welfare association.
