BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Initial investigations revealed that last Tuesday's major power outage was due to a disruption of the 66kV transmission system, which in turn affected the operation of the upstream power stations in Brunei-Muara, Tutong and Belait districts, Brunei's Department of Electrical Services (DES) at the Prime Minister's Office said on Wednesday.

Brunei experienced a sudden and extensive power outage from around 11:30 a.m. local time last Tuesday until around 2:30 a.m. local time the next day.

The unexpected power outage caused widespread inconvenience and daily life disruptions, affecting commercial buildings, businesses, educational institutions, hospitals and traffic.

In a statement issued on social media, the DES said that it would like to apologize to all the affected customers, stating all recovery work has been carried out in accordance with safety procedures.

The DES also said that the power outage was due to a failure in one of the installations in the 66kV transmission system. Detailed investigations are still underway to identify the cause of the failure.

"The DES has also inspected other similar installations and has taken appropriate actions accordingly," the DES added.
