NEW DELHI, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed on Thursday after a car rammed into a stationary tanker truck in India's southwestern state of Karnataka, police said.
The accident took place on the Bangalore-Hyderabad national highway in Chikkaballapur district, about 62 km north of Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka.
"Today a speeding car carrying 13 people collided with a stationary tanker truck in Chikkaballapur, killing 12 people on the spot ... and injuring one, who later on succumbed in the hospital," a police official said.
According to the police, the ill-fated car carrying passengers was on its way to Bengaluru from Anantapur district of neighboring Andhra Pradesh state.
Preliminary investigations carried out by the police suggest fog and low visibility might have caused the accident.
Around 150,000 people are killed every year in about half a million road crashes across India, officials said.
The Indian government has set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024. ■
