TOKYO, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- Industrial production in Japan was flat in August compared to a month earlier, the government said in a report on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the seasonally adjusted index of output at factories and mines stood at 103.8 against the base of 100 for 2020.

The preliminary reading came on the heels of an upwardly revised 1.8 percent decline in July, showed the report.

In August, the index of industrial shipments gained 0.1 percent from last month to 103.2, while that of inventories slipped 1.7 percent to 104.6.

The government maintained its assessment that industrial production "fluctuated indecisively."

Looking ahead, manufacturers surveyed by the ministry said they expect factory output to rise 5.8 percent and 3.8 percent in September and October, respectively.
