JAKARTA, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Volcanic ashes were thrown as high as 1 km above the peak of Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia when it erupted on Monday, according to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

The eruption occurred at 08:42 a.m. local time and lasted three minutes 28 seconds, with the wind carrying thick gray ashes to the southwest, said Mount Anak Krakatau monitoring post officer Deny Mardiono.

Located in the Sunda Strait which separates the islands of Java and Sumatra, the mountain, most of which is under the sea, has been at the third level of danger since April 24 last year.

People are not allowed to move into the 5 km radius danger zone from the active crater.
