YANGON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Sixty people were killed and 132 others injured in connection with 97 traffic accidents on Myanmar's Yangon-Mandalay highway in the first seven months of 2023, the state-run newspaper the Global New Light of Myanmar quoting the highway traffic police reported on Wednesday.

The death toll included 43 males and 17 females, while the injured included 81 males and 51 females, the Nay Pyi Taw Expressway Traffic Police Force said.

Among the seven months, April saw the highest number of road accidents on the Yangon-Mandalay highway with 20 accidents that killed 14 people and injured 36, it said.

The 587-km highway connects the country's commercial city Yangon and the second-largest city of Mandalay.

Human errors such as overspeeding, negligent driving, and drowsy driving are mostly blamed for highway accidents in the country.
