TOKYO, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Powerful typhoon Khanun will again bring fierce wind and rainstorms to the Japanese southern island prefecture of Okinawa during the weekend, the country's weather agency reported.
Khanun, the sixth typhoon of the year, will be quite close to Okinawa and Amami-Oshima Island in the southwestern Kagoshima prefecture from Saturday to Sunday, with the latter expected to brace the storms in the early morning of Saturday, Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
As of 10 p.m. local time on Friday, the powerful typhoon was northwest of Kumejima, moving northeast at about 10 km per hour. The storm had an atmospheric pressure of 965 hectopascals at its center, packing winds of up to 50 meters per second, it added.
The typhoon is expected to get quite close to Okinawa and Amami over the weekend while maintaining a strong force, then move northward over the southern Sea of Japan before approaching western Japan.
Earlier this week, typhoon Khanun brought destruction across Okinawa, leaving two dead and more than 70 injured. ■
