TOKYO, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed moderately lower on Wednesday, with investors retreating to the sidelines ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's announcement of the outcome of its two-day policy meeting later in the day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 14.17 points, or 0.04 pct, to finish at 32,668.34.

The broader Topix index, meanwhile, ended down 2.29 points, or 0.10 percent, at 2,283.09.

Stocks traded in a narrow range after recouping early losses as cautious mood remained ahead of the Fed meeting, where it is widely expected to raise interest rates by 0.25 percentage point.

Decliners were led by rubber product, transportation equipment and mining issues.

Among automakers, Toyota Motor lost 22.5 yen, or 1.0 percent, to 2,322.0 yen, while Honda Motor fell 46 yen, or 1.0 percent, to 4,435 yen. (1 yen equals 0.0071 U.S. dollar)
