COLOMBO, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Elections Commission of the Maldives has planned to set up 604 ballot boxes for this year's presidential election, local media reported on Monday.
The ballot boxes will be stationed in the Maldives and abroad, and the first round of the election will be held on Sept. 9, Vice President of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb was quoted as saying.
Overseas ballot boxes will be set up in countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Britain, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates, Habeeb said.
Habeeb also said that the total number of polling stations to be established will likely increase after voter re-registration.
The second round of the election, if required, is scheduled for Sept. 30, Maldivian media reported.
Several candidates including incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih have declared their intention of contesting in the upcoming election. ■
