SVAY RIENG, Cambodia, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said here on Sunday that only the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) can safeguard peace and development as the kingdom is gearing up for a general election next month.
"The CPP remains the best choice for people to secure peace and development...and no other political parties can replace it," he said in a speech during a get-together with some 22,000 factory workers in southeastern Svay Rieng Province's Bavet City.
He urged people to vote for the CPP in the upcoming election, saying that voting for the CPP is to continue to maintain peace and development.
The CPP has ruled the country since 1979. Hun Sen said the CPP-led government has attracted investors worldwide to invest in various sectors, generating millions of jobs for local people.
The government will continue to attract foreign investors to create some 300,000 new jobs a year for youths, he said, adding that the kingdom's economy is projected to grow 5.6 percent in 2023 and up to 6.6 percent in 2024.
The Southeast Asian nation is scheduled to hold a general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on July 23, 2023.
According to the National Election Committee, 18 political parties will contest in the election, which will see more than 9.7 million eligible people casting their ballots.
In the last general election held five years ago, the CPP won all 125 seats in the National Assembly. ■
