PHNOM PENH, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's anti-drug police have arrested two foreigners for trafficking 1.59 kg of cocaine across borders, the country's Anti-Drug Police Department (ADP) said in a report on Friday.

The suspects are identified as Knights Joel Isiah, a Trinidad and Tobago man, and Arthan Thatsanee, a Thai woman, the ADP said, adding that they are both arrested at the Phnom Penh International Airport on Monday.

The Trinidad and Tobago man had smuggled the drug hidden in a suitcase from Brazil's Sao Paulo through Dubai and Malaysia before arriving in Phnom Penh, with the final destination in Thailand, the ADP said, adding that the Thai woman planned to pick up the drug from the man in order to smuggle into Thailand.

The Southeast Asian country has no death sentence for a drug trafficker. Under its law, someone found guilty of trafficking more than 80 grams of illicit drugs could be jailed for life.

According to the ADP, Cambodia nabbed 7,230 drug-related suspects, including 136 foreigners, during the January-May period of 2023, seizing nearly 785 kg of narcotics.

Most of seized drugs are ketamine, crystal meth, methamphetamine pills, heroin, ecstasy and cocaine.
