SYDNEY, May 30 (Xinhua) -- A shooting occurred on Tuesday at a primary school in southwest Sydney, with no casualties reported, according to police in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW).

NSW Police Force Detective Superintendent Grant Healey told media that shortly after 12:30 p.m. local time, police were called to a school on Fields Road, Macquarie Fields, due to a projectile that smashed a window in the school.

"Upon the police's arrival, it was established that the projectile may have been a bullet," Healey said at a press conference held on Tuesday afternoon.

When the shooting took place, Year One and Year Two students were in the classroom with their teachers. The bullet was just enough to smash the window because it didn't come into the classroom with any speed or velocity after being stopped by the blind, said the police officer.

Early investigations suggested that this was not a targeted act toward the school, while police were still waiting for more ballistic details.

"It's a totally reckless act by somebody who's acting in a way with a firearm that is very dangerous for the community," Healey said.

He also called on members of the public to provide information related to the shooting.
