KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 23 (Xinhua) -- One child has been killed and two others injured as a mine left over from past wars went off in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province, provincial administration spokesman Ahmad Aziz said on Tuesday.

A group of children found a toy-like device in Khakreez district of Kandahar province on Monday evening and began playing with it, but the device exploded, killing a child on the spot and injuring two others, Aziz added.

The injured children have been taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

A similar blast claimed a child's life and injured another in the eastern Ghazni province a day earlier on Sunday.

Afghanistan is reportedly one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world, as dozens of people, mostly children, are killed and maimed every month due to blasts of unexploded ordnances left over from the past four decades of wars and civil strife.
