YANGON, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar has decided to extend zero tariffs on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for one year until March 31, 2024, according to the country's Ministry of Planning and Finance on Tuesday.
The zero-tariff treatment on the BEVs, first imposed in November last year, expired on March 31.
The ministry said that it has reduced the tariffs on electric vehicles, related items and spare parts to zero percent with approvals from the government. It aims to encourage EV use in the country and develop the EVs industry and related businesses, it said.
The zero-tariff treatment covers the BEVs imported under Completely Built Up (CBU), Completely Knocked Down (CKD) and Semi-Knocked Down (SKD), including road tractors, passenger vehicles, trucks, three-wheeler vehicles, electric motorcycles, electric bicycles, ambulances, prison vans and hearses, the ministry said.
Myanmar is implementing a one-year electric vehicle (EV) pilot project from Jan. 1 until Dec. 31, importing EVs and constructing charging stations. ■
