S. Korea's imported car sale falls in March

SEOUL, April 5 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's imported car sale fell in single figures in March from a year earlier despite its growth on a monthly basis, industry data showed Wednesday.

The number of imported vehicles sold here stood at 23,840 in March, down 4.3 percent from a year ago, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA).

Compared to the previous month, the number increased 10.3 percent last month due to the launch of new models.

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz ranked first in terms of automotive sales here among foreign companies by selling 6,533 units last month.

Another German carmaker BMW came next with a domestic sale of 5,664 units, followed by Audi with 2,260 units, Volvo with 2,156 units and Lexus with 1,376 units respectively.

The number of European models sold here was 19,933 in March, accounting for 83.6 percent of the total. Japanese and U.S. brands recorded the market shares of 9.4 percent and 7.0 percent each.

For the first three months of this year, the imported vehicle sales totaled 61,684 units, down 0.1 percent compared to the same period of last year.
