Afghan forces discover weapon caches in Helmand, Baghlan prrovinces

KABUL, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Afghan forces have discovered weapon caches in the southern Helmand and northern Baghlan provinces over the past couple of days, officials said Wednesday.

In the first achievement, which occurred in the southern Helmand province, the personnel of the General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) or the country's counter-intelligence agency launched operations in Greshk district on Tuesday, discovering a weapon cache containing a variety of arms and ammunition, a GDI statement asserted.

The weapons and other equipment included nine Kalashnikovs, four machine guns, a pistol, rocket and mortar mines, three sets of Walkie-talkie and thousands of bullets and cartridges, the statement added.

Moreover, the GDI personnel have also discovered rocket-propelled grenade, mortar weapons, five stock of AK-47 and thousands of bullets from neighboring Nimroz province.

In a similar search operation, police in the northern Baghlan province found 64 pieces of BM1 missiles on Monday, provincial police department said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Afghan caretaker government has vowed to collect arms and ammunition from anyone living outside security organs.

According to officials, the authorities have collected thousands of pieces of light and heavy weapons including tanks, artillery and anti-aircraft guns over the past 18 months.
