ISLAMABAD, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan observed the annual Earth Hour Saturday night by turning off lights and appliances in an effort to spread awareness about the green planet and energy conservation.

The Earth Hour was observed in Pakistan under the theme of "60 minutes for the planet" by keeping the lights off in official as well as private buildings for one hour across the South Asian country.

Pakistan's Parliament, Supreme Court, President House, Prime Minister House and Pakistan TV Headquarters in the capital Islamabad were among the buildings which observed the Earth Hour.

Earlier in the day, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in a statement that Pakistan had joined the global community in observing the Earth Hour and demonstrating its commitment to the fulfillment of its obligations to climate change actions.

"Saving our planet from the ill effects of climate change is a collective endeavor, one in which everyone matters," said the prime minister.

Earth Hour is an annual global environmental movement organized by the WWF. Every year on the last Saturday of March, it calls people around the world to switch off lights at 8:30 p.m. in their local time to show support for the planet.
