COLOMBO, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Public health inspectors urged Sri Lankans to be vigilant of food safety after a recent food poisoning incident, head of the Public Health Inspectors Union (PHIU) said on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo, he said four people who had visited Sri Pada, a popular religious site, died after showing symptoms of food poisoning, adding that another 10 had been hospitalized.

"There are speculations that they may have been infected with a kind of bacteria. We are not yet 100 percent sure what caused these deaths," he said.

He also urged Sri Lankans not to panic as only a few people out of the hundreds and thousands of pilgrims to the site died.

Rohana added that they were looking into what's going on and that the public would be informed if there were new developments.
