SYDNEY, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The police force in Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) announced on Thursday that a woman has been charged after a fatal bus crash in Sydney's southwest claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy.
The police said in a statement that emergency services were called to the Cobbitty Road in Cobbitty just before 3:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday and found a 14-year-old boy critically injured.
Paramedics treated the boy at the scene before taking him to Liverpool Hospital, but he died a short time later.
The bus driver, a 54-year-old woman, was taken to Liverpool Hospital for mandatory testing and was arrested at about 8:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday.
According to NSW Police Force, the driver was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, driving in a dangerous manner, and negligent driving.
She was refused bail to appear at a local court and her license was also suspended.
On Thursday morning, David Nockles, headmaster of Macarthur Anglican School, confirmed the tragic death of the Year-9 student, following the accident that occurred at the front of the school.
"At present, all that can be confirmed is that a public transport bus lost control as it moved away from the bus bays, mounting the kerb," said Nockles.
The headmaster expressed condolence to the bereaved families, including the victim's brother in Year 11, adding that care and counselling services will continue to be available to students and staff. ■
