DHAKA, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- Md Shahabuddin Chuppu, a former Anti-Corruption Commission official, is all set to become the next president of Bangladesh as the country's ruling party nominated him as its presidential candidate Sunday.
A delegation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) party led by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader, also Bangladeshi Road, Transport and Bridges minister, submitted his nomination papers to the Election Commission in Dhaka on Sunday.
Bangladesh's Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal announced on Jan. 25 this year that the country's presidential election will be held on Feb. 19.
According to the schedule, the nomination papers can be submitted to the Chief Election Commission office till 4 p.m. local time on Feb. 12.
The incumbent President Abdul Hamid cannot be elected president for another term as the country's constitution allows a maximum of two terms for a person in the post of president.
Hamid's second and last tenure will expire on April 24.
According to the Constitution of Bangladesh, members of parliament are voters in the presidential election.
As AL has the absolute majority in the current parliament, it is assumed that Md Shahabuddin Chuppu will be the next president of Bangladesh.
Also, there is no possibility of any party other than the AL nominating a candidate to the presidential polls. ■
