Malaysia's wholesale, retail trade rise 19.6 pct in 2022

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's wholesale and Retail trade rose 19.6 percent year on year to 1.6 trillion ringgit in 2022, official data showed Wednesday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia said in a statement that the growth was underpinned by retail trade, which increased by 23.9 percent to settle at 661.1 billion ringgit.

This was followed by wholesale trade which expanded 10.7 percent to 710.3 billion ringgit.

The motor vehicle sub-sector also recorded higher sales than in 2021, surging 47.6 percent to 183.2 billion ringgit.

As for pre-pandemic comparison, sales of wholesale and retail trade in 2022 surpassed those recorded in 2019 by 228.1 billion ringgit.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's wholesale and retail trade rose 13.8 percent year on year to hit an all time high of 137.3 billion ringgit in December 2022.

The increase was attributed to the retail trade sub-sector, which recorded an increase of 22.7 percent to 59.5 billion ringgit.

Meanwhile, motor vehicles expanded 20.3 percent to 17.5 billion ringgit; wholesale trade went up 4.7 percent to 60.3 billion ringgit.

As for the fourth quarter of 2022, the wholesale and retail trade grew 14.3 percent year on year to 405.2 billion ringgit. (1 ringgit equals 0.23 USD).
