COLOMBO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Wednesday decided not to cut the power until the end of university entrance exams, the country's Human Rights Commission announced.
Issuing a press release, the commission said there will be uninterrupted power until Feb. 17.
Sri Lanka has been experiencing daily power cuts since early 2022 due to foreign reserve shortages. About 45 percent of the country's electricity is generated by thermal power, which relies on the import of fuel, according to government data.
The country's electricity producer Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) earlier announced that it would not be able to provide uninterrupted power during university entrance exams because they could not afford fossil fuels.
However, at a meeting held at the Human Rights Commission on Wednesday, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the country's main importer and distributor of fuel, agreed to provide fuel to the CEB. ■
