5th Kalvari class submarine commissioned into Indian Navy

NEW DELHI, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The fifth Kalvari class submarine "Vagir" was commissioned into the Indian Navy on Monday.

The Kalvari class submarines are being built in the country by the Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in collaboration with France's Naval Group. Four of the Kalvari class of submarines have already been commissioned into the Indian Navy.

According to a statement by the defense ministry, the Indian Navy Ship (INS) Vagir will boost the Indian Navy's capability to further the country's maritime interests.

The submarine is capable of undertaking diverse missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and surveillance missions, according to the statement.
