TOKYO, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Japanese universities Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, which are aiming to merge in fiscal 2024, announced Thursday that they have decided to name the new university Institute of Science Tokyo.

The new university's name expresses its strong will to guide the advancement of science and work together with society to create a vibrant future, the two top-tier universities said in a joint statement.

The name will become official after necessary procedures, such as registering with the education ministry. The English abbreviation for the new university has yet to be decided.

Last October, the two universities announced that they would merge into a new national university by the end of fiscal 2024 to enhance their global competitiveness in the field of science.

The two institutions are among only 10 national schools designated by the Japanese government as having top-level research capabilities in the country.
