BISHKEK, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Kyrgyzstan's Ministry of Education and Science has extended school winter holidays due to abnormally cold weather, its press service said Tuesday.

Holidays began on Dec. 30 last year and was supposed to end on Wednesday. The ministry decided to extend the holidays until Sunday, given the adverse weather conditions, according to a press release.

A cold wave is expected to hit Kyrgyzstan from Wednesday with snow and intense precipitation in some parts of the country, with air temperatures in some regions dropping to minus 38 degrees Celsius, Kyrgyzstan's Hydrometeorological Service warned.

The cold weather will negatively impact the grazing and maintenance of livestock and the operation of vehicles, communications, energy and utilities, the service added.
