TOKYO, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Consumer prices in Tokyo rose 3.6 percent in November from a year earlier, marking the steepest increase in 40 years, Japanese government data showed Friday.

According to Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Tokyo's core consumer price index in November, which excludes volatile fresh food items, hit its highest level since the 4.2 percent logged in April 1982, amid soaring food and energy costs and the yen's sharp depreciation.

The latest figure exceeded the Bank of Japan's 2 percent target for the sixth straight month, signaling broadening inflationary pressure.

The inflation data for Tokyo is considered to be a leading indicator of nationwide trends. The November figures for all of Japan are scheduled to be released next month.
