NEW DELHI, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in the southern Indian state of Kerala have confirmed an outbreak of swine flu, the state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) said Wednesday.
The outbreak has been confirmed at a pig farm in Cherppu village in Thrissur district, and pigs in an area of 1 km around the farm would be culled and scientifically eliminated, AIR reported.
"Pigs within a 10 km radius of the infected farm will be strictly monitored," a local media report quoting officials said.
Authorities have also imposed a ban on the buying and selling of pigs, pig feed and pork within 1 km of the infected farm.
A control room has been set up to coordinate the preventive measures in the district.
Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by the H1N1 virus. ■
