NEW DELHI, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government has extended the last date for the exports of broken rice in transit till Sept. 30, confirmed a senior official on Wednesday.

The federal government had banned exports of broken rice on Sept. 8, allowing the consignments in transit to be exported till Sept. 15 only.

"Exports of consignments of broken rice, as permissible under notification dated September 8, has been extended till September 30, 2022," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification.

The federal government had imposed the ban primarily to address the probable shortage of the commodity in the domestic market in the coming months, as the overall sown area under paddy this sowing season could be much lower compared to last year.

Correction of rising prices is another reason being cited for the ban on exports.
