SUVA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- The people of the Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu have been advised to prepare in advance for any adverse impacts of La Nina.

Vanuatu's climate division declared earlier this week the third La Nina event was under way, which means Vanuatu should expect above normal rainfall from October to December, Vanuatu Daily Post reported on Tuesday.

La Nina events increase the chances of above normal rainfall, which may trigger flash flooding, flooding of low-lying areas, and land and mud slides.

These flooding can cause significant destruction to properties and road structures and may increase the number of tropical cyclones in the country.

Local communities have been urged to take appropriate preparatory actions and consult relevant local authorities for specific information on this La Nina event.

"All people are encouraged to observe local indicators around their communities to help them prepare in advance for any adverse impacts of La Nina," said the climate division.
