KABUL, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Taliban-led administration is expected to rebuild 2,200 houses for earthquake-affected households in the eastern region, with the foundation work for 1,000 houses started in the Barmal district of the Paktika province.

Mawlawi Sharafudin Muslim, deputy minister of state for disaster management and humanitarian affairs, said in a statement issued by the department that the project is supported by the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR.

More than 2,000 houses were utterly destroyed or badly damaged in a tremor that hit parts of Afghanistan on June 22. The destructive quake killed more than 1,000 people and injured more than 3,000 others, mostly in the Gayan and Barmal districts of Paktika and the Spera district of the neighboring Khost province. ■
