NEW DELHI, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Indian President Droupadi Murmu lauded women's role in nation building Sunday as the country is celebrating 75th anniversary of independence.

Women were contributing immensely in nation building as they are working in almost every field, from fighter pilots to space scientists, Murmu said in the customary address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day.

This was the first address to the nation by Droupadi Murmu who took over as the 15th President of India last month.

"Indian women are gaining self-confidence. Over 1.4 million women are a part of local governance at village level called 'Panchayati Raj'. Our daughters won laurels in the just-concluded Commonwealth Games," said Murmu.
