Fiji reports 1 more COVID-19-related death

SUVA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A baby has died due to COVID-19 in Fiji, bringing the death toll in the island nation to 875 since March 2020 when it recorded the first confirmed COVID-19 case.

Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Health James Fong confirmed that the child was sent to a Suva hospital three weeks after birth with severe COVID-19, and despite the best efforts of clinicians, he died last Saturday, according to reports from Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) on Friday.

Fiji has reported 59 new cases of COVID-19 since Tuesday. Of the cases, 15 cases were reported in the central part of the country, 42 cases in the western part and two cases in the northern part.

As an island country with a population of around 900,000, Fiji has reported more than 67,000 COVID-19 cases since March 2020.
