VIENTIANE, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- The heavy rainfall in Laos during Aug. 6-9 resulted in floods, damaging houses and infrastructure, and inundating hundreds of hectares of farmland in provinces and capital Vientiane.
The heavy rains across Laos caused flooding and affected capital Vientiane, provinces of Sekong and Savannakhet, as well as several districts of Champasak and Xayaboury provinces, among others.
Floods hit areas of capital Vientiane, resulting in widespread disruption of traffic, according to Laophattana Daily News report on Thursday.
Lao officials surveyed the areas hardest-hit by flooding. There are 29 flood-damaged areas in 25 villages with at least 839 families affected in Sikhottabong district of capital Vientiane.
Some places remained under water because the rainfall increased and flooded low-lying areas, and the drainage system was blocked with garbage and mud, making it difficult to drain water.
According to the report, Thapangthong district in Savannakhet province has been affected by continuous rainfall over the past several days, resulting in accumulated water which flooded houses and farmlands along the Mekong River and several streams.
Preliminary data collected by local authorities in Savannakhet showed at least nine villages in Thapangthong district were affected and more than 63 houses were damaged by flooding.
Almost 200 hectares of farmlands have been inundated and some infrastructures have been damaged.
The weather bureau of Laos has warned people to remain alert for flooding and landslides following several days of rainfall. ■
