JAKARTA, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is planning to plant 1 million dwarf coconut trees across the archipelago country, President Joko Widodo said on Thursday during a visit to Central Java province.

The president, also known as Jokowi, visited two villages in the province and planted dwarf coconut trees alongside a number of officials. Jokowi said the authorities had so far planted around 200,000 dwarf coconut trees in the province.

"This is just starting here. Later, we will plant them in the provinces where coconuts can grow well. The target is approximately 1 million dwarf coconuts," he told a virtual press conference.

Jokowi said a dwarf coconut tree is able to produce 180 fruits in one year and they can be processed into palm sugar and cooking oil and will hence increase the income of the locals.
