SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The construction work for a water canal kicked off late on Tuesday in Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province, the state-owned Bakhtar News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Funded by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) at a cost of 100,000 U.S. dollars, the project was launched in Faizabad district and would irrigate 47 hectares of land, allowing more than 4,000 people to have potable water, the media outlet said.

Similarly, the news agency also reported that work for the construction of a water canal at a cost of 8.5 million afghanis (94,320 dollars) financed by UNDP began in Khogiani district of the eastern Nangarhar province recently.

The 8-km-long canal will irrigate more than 2,000 acres of land and benefit 18,000 local families, Bakhtar added.
