COLOMBO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet of ministers on Tuesday granted approval to the registration of electric three-wheelers in the country in order to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.

The government information department said that the government had received multiple requests from various parties seeking permission to register electric three-wheelers in the country to promote the use of electric vehicles.

Presently, Sri Lanka's motor vehicles act does not provide for the registration of electric three-wheelers. But following a proposal tabled by Transport and Highways Minister Bandula Gunawardena, the cabinet of ministers agreed to amend the act to allow the registrations.

Three-wheelers are currently part of Sri Lanka's public transport system and they run on petrol and diesel.
