COLOMBO, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's electricity sector regulator on Tuesday granted approval to a proposal to increase electricity prices by 75 percent.

Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) Janaka Ratnayake said the price revision is effective from Aug. 10.

With the price hike, the bill of consumers who use up to 30 units per month will increase by 198 rupees.

The average monthly electricity bill for those who use up to 60 units will be increased by approximately 200 rupees.

The Ceylon Electricity Board earlier sought an increase of 276 percent for consumers who use more than 90 units.

The PUCSL approved a 125 percent hike for that price bracket. (1 U.S. dollar equals 361 Sri Lankan rupees)
