12 injured as 22-wheeled lorry hits passenger bus in Myanmar

YANGON, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- A total of 12 people were injured on Thursday evening when a 22-wheeled lorry hit a passenger bus in southeastern Myanmar's Kayin state.

The accident occurred on an Asian Highway at 4:15 p.m. local time, involving a passenger bus carrying Myanmar workers heading for Thailand, according to U Hla Shwe, head of the White Pearl Rescue Organization.

"The bus driver and a passenger on board were critically injured, and they were being sent to Hpa-An General Hospital," U Hla Shwe said, adding that 12 people including the bus driver out of the more than 40 people aboard the bus were injured. The other injured people were under treatment in the Kawkareik Hospital.

"The 22-wheeled lorry driver fled from the scene. Most of the injured are not in critical condition. The passenger bus driver was dragged out of the car and in critical condition," a police officer from Kayin State told Xinhua.
