KABUL, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Police have arrested eight drug traffickers in two western Afghan provinces, and confiscated illicit drugs, the country's Ministry of Interior confirmed on Sunday.
The Afghan National Police made the arrests in Herat and the neighboring Nimroz province, the ministry said in a statement.
According to the statement, police also confiscated some amounts of drugs and narcotics from the arrestees.
The Afghan caretaker government has vowed to fight illicit drugs, drug production and trafficking since the Taliban's supreme leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada issued a decree in early April, announcing a strict ban on poppy cultivation and opium trade. ■
