JAKARTA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Five critically endangered orangutans have been released into the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park on Indonesia's island of Borneo, West Kalimantan Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) said on Tuesday.
Head of West Kalimantan BKSDA Sadtata Noor Adirahmanta said the five orangutans are all from West Kalimantan. "They have undergone rehabilitation at the IAR Indonesia Foundation Rehabilitation Center, and medical tests concluded that they were fit to be released into the wild."
Having good vegetation and a wide variety of orangutan food, the Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park is a suitable habitat for the animals of Borneo, which the International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies as critically endangered.
These orangutans, who lived in tropical forests on the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra, took a 15-hour road and river trip from Ketapang Regency to their habitat in the park. ■
