NEW DELHI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- India's wholesale price index (WPI) rose to 15.88 percent in May, data released by the federal ministry of commerce and industry on Tuesday said.

The high rate of inflation in May is primarily due to a rise in prices of mineral oils, crude petroleum and natural gas, food articles, basic metals, non-food articles, chemicals and chemical products, and food products, the statement said.

In April, wholesale price inflation was recorded at 15.08 percent.

WPI inflation, an indicator of prices in the wholesale market, rises or falls mainly due to a steep increase or decrease in commodity prices globally.
