SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Police in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir said on Friday that they killed 10 militants during a three-day span in the region.

The militants, according to the police, were killed in four separate gunfights.

"Ten militants were killed in three days in different gunfights in the region," a senior police official said.

According to the police, four militants were killed in two different overnight gunfights in Pulwama and Srinagar districts.

Earlier on Wednesday, government forces killed three militants in the frontier Kupwara district and three others were neutralized in the adjacent Baramulla district.

According to government forces, most of the gunfights in the region were being carried out on prior specific intelligence suggesting the presence of militants.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
