BISHKEK, May 26 (Xinhua) -- It is important for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) to strengthen cooperation and make full use of their strengths amid profound global changes, SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming said here on Thursday.

Attending the first Eurasian Economic Forum, Zhang noted that the two organizations officially established their cooperative relationship in 2021, and have interacted in such areas as economy, finance, logistics, investment, trade, digitalization, customs regulation, industry, energy and agriculture, among others.

"Based on this, the two organizations have improved the legal basis for cooperation. We express the hope that effective interactions and in-depth cooperation will bring practical benefits to regional development," Zhang said.

"The international situation is undergoing profound changes, and the COVID-19 pandemic is having a serious impact on global and regional economies. It is even more important for us to unite forces and make full use of the strengths of both organizations," he said.

He also voiced the hope for the better development of and greater contributions from both organizations.

The first Eurasian Economic Forum opened in Bishkek on Thursday with the participation of more than 2,500 representatives. With the theme of "Eurasian Economic Integration in the Era of Global Changes. New Opportunities for Investments," the forum is being held on the eve of the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the highest governing body of the EAEU.
