Earthquake shakes Afghanistan's Takhar, Kunduz provinces

TALUQAN, Afghanistan, May 24 (Xinhua) -- A relatively powerful earthquake jolted Afghanistan's Takhar and Kunduz provinces on Tuesday, locals said.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 jolted 63 km SE of Farkhar district on Tuesday.

"I was sitting in my shop when the tremble jolted the area and all the goods in the shop fell down and scattered, I scared and escaped the shop," shopkeeper Abdul Haq from Farkhar district told Xinhua.

According to locals, the quake was also felt in neighboring Kunduz province, but there was no report on casualties.

In the meantime, Mohammad Zarif, an official from the Farkhar district administration, told Xinhua that authorities had begun to collect information on possible property damages due to the tremble.
