SUVA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Fiji has reported five new deaths from leptospirosis recently, bringing the death toll from leptospirosis in the island nation to 41 this year.
Fiji's Health Ministry also has registered 111 new cases of leptospirosis, bringing the tally of lab-confirmed cases of leptospirosis to 2,068 this year, the Fijivillage news website reported on Tuesday.
The leptospirosis bacteria is spread to humans through the urine of infected animals, such as cows, pigs, rats and dogs.
Meanwhile, the ministry confirmed that Fiji has recorded 1,960 lab-confirmed cases of dengue fever this year with 92 new cases. The island nation has also reported 116 lab-confirmed cases of typhoid fever this year with five new cases.
Typhoid fever has claimed six lives in Fiji this year.
Fijians have been urged to take necessary measures against leptospirosis, dengue fever and typhoid fever. ■
