Vietnam's daily COVID-19 infections hit new record of 36,200 cases

HANOI, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam registered a new record daily number of 36,200 COVID-19 infections on Thursday, an increase of 1,463 from Wednesday, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new infections, including 36,190 domestically transmitted and 10 imported, were logged in 62 localities nationwide.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the locality with the highest number of infections on Thursday with 3,893 cases, followed by the northern Thai Nguyen province with 2,478 cases and the northern Quang Ninh province with 2,477 cases.

The infections brought the total tally to 2,643,024 with 39,278 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 2,254,965 patients, or 85 percent of the total infections, have so far recovered from the pandemic.

Around 189.8 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 34.1 million third shots, have been administered in the Southeast Asian country, said the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Thursday, the country has registered over 2.6 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in April 2021, according to the health ministry.
