HANOI, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 15,779 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, including 15,751 locally transmitted and 28 imported, according to the Ministry of Health.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the locality with the highest number of infections on Sunday with 2,811 cases, followed by the northern Hai Phong city with 836 cases and the central Khanh Hoa province with 790 cases.

On the same day, health authorities also documented 7,402 COVID-19 infections detected earlier in the southern Binh Phuoc province.

The infections brought the country's total tally to 1,899,575 with 34,319 deaths. Nationwide, 1,500,248 COVID-19 patients have so far recovered, up 12,210 from Saturday.

More than 160 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, including 70.9 million second shots and 10.9 million third shots, have been administered, according to the ministry.

Vietnam has by far gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication and infectivity. As of Sunday, the country has registered nearly 1.9 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in late April last year, the ministry said. ■
