LUSAKA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese automaker Sany launched its electric commercial trucks in Zambia on Tuesday, as the country looks to advance cleaner transport.
The launch in the Zambian capital of Lusaka followed a strategic partnership with local firm Pilatus Engineering Company Limited, which will distribute Sany vehicles in the country.
Wang Chao, Sany's original equipment manufacturer representative, said that the partnership will strengthen Sany's footprint in Zambia's commercial vehicle market through an established local dealership.
"The partnership demonstrates our confidence in Zambia and our commitment to building a strong, long-term presence in the country," said Wang, adding that Sany aims to introduce innovative transport solutions to the Zambian market, unlocking new opportunities for the nation's commercial transport industry.
He described the deployment of electric commercial trucks as a vital step toward expanding transport options in Zambia, adding that Sany will work closely with local businesses to deliver tailored solutions while laying the groundwork for future opportunities.
He also noted that while diesel trucks will continue to meet existing customer demands, electric vehicles will offer a compelling alternative where operating conditions, charging infrastructure, and business economics permit.
Collins Nzovu, Zambian minister of infrastructure and urban development, welcomed the collaboration, saying it is a milestone for the national transport sector. Electric vehicles can enhance efficiency, reduce operational expenses, and drive the transition toward cleaner transportation, he said.
Nzovu said that the initiative aligns with the government's agenda to promote electric mobility, and the government will support building the necessary infrastructure, including charging networks, to accelerate the transition.
Nzovu urged Sany to establish a lasting presence powered by quality products, dependable services, and strong local partnerships.
Angelika Anderson, managing director of Pilatus Engineering Company Limited, said the firm selected Sany as its partner to enter the commercial vehicle market due to the Chinese brand's strong global reputation.
She noted that the company will support the product launch with a dedicated Sany showroom, an online sales platform, and a fully equipped workshop for after-sales services. ■
